Librarians: facilitators in the Cochrane review process?

Objective: To give the participants a clear concept of how healthcare librarians can contribute to and enrich the systematic review process.

Summary: This workshop is aimed at healthcare librarians and all who have an interest in exploiting the range of information and knowledge resources that they have access to.

The workshop will offer participants an opportunity to explore and elaborate the contribution made by healthcare librarians to the systematic review process, and articulate clear reasons why a librarian should be a member of every systematic review team. The underlying presupposition to this discussion is that no systematic review can be fully successful without the inclusion of a healthcare librarian on the systematic review team. The workshop will discern what some of these unique competencies are, such as:

  • techniques for discerning and structuring focussed questions;
  • knowledge of and defined competencies in searching healthcare literature;
  • facilitating the review process;
  • training and enabling team members to search for evidence and knowledge.
The workshop will also encourage participants to discuss the range of skills that are necessary for librarians to collaborate fully within a systematic review team. These might include:
  • knowledge of research and statistical methods;
  • presentational skills;
  • teaching and training skills;
  • advanced searching skills;
  • interpersonal skills;
  • subject specific knowledge.

Level of knowledge required to attend: intermediate.
