The need to improve 'Implications for research' sections in Cochrane reviews.

Objective: To present the results of a survey of the content of 'Implications for research' sections in Cochrane reviews and the development of guidelines for improving research recommendations.

Summary: Decisions about funding new research studies are increasingly being informed by the research recommendations made in Cochrane and other systematic reviews. Sometimes the content of the 'Implications for research' sections in Cochrane reviews is specific; sometimes it is non-specific. This is one of two linked workshops. At the workshop a survey of the current content of 'Implications for research' sections in Cochrane reviews and guidelines for improving these sections will be presented, followed by commentaries by research commissioners. At the linked workshop (W47 Improving 'Implications for research' sections of Cochrane reviews), the experience of applying the guidelines in the reviews published by the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group will be described, followed by a discussion of this pilot experience and how it can inform future efforts by The Cochrane Collaboration to be more helpful to commissioners of new research.
